Trends in employment law have been evolving in New Zealand, particularly post COVID-19 times. Recent world events have challenged us to look at the employee-employer relationship with a much wider lens. Flexible work environments, performance issues, workplace investigations into inappropriate conducts and mental health concerns are evolving areas of consideration. The general picture has been one of increasing compliance risks and costs to employers.

Michael is a Partner and head of the Employment team at Quigg Partners in Wellington, New Zealand. He specialises in all areas of employment law and workplace health and safety, with over 30 years of experience in advising a broad range of clients. Michael and his team provide advice on all aspects of employment law and workplace health and safety to both New Zealand-based and multinational companies with operations throughout Australasia and the rest of the World. Clients assisted by Michael and his team range from multinational corporations and government departments to local small businesses and individuals. Michael has appeared in various employment forums and Courts including the Coroners Court over the years in relation to a number of cases dealing with all aspects of employment law and health and safety. Michael has a special interest in Board and CEO issues. Michael currently sits as a Member of the New Zealand Parole Board.
Simon is a Partner in Quigg Partners’ employment law group. He was admitted to the Bar in 2008 and has over 10 years’ experience in all aspects of employment law. He advises a wide array of clients, from small businesses to multinational entities and public sector organisations. He regularly represents clients at mediation, and has appeared in the Employment Relations Authority, Employment Court and both the District and High Courts. Simon has a particular interest and expertise in complex restructurings, the employment-related aspects of sales and purchases of businesses, and solving contentious employment disputes. Simon assists clients with their Health and Safety obligations by providing advice on compliance, but has also acted for clients defending WorkSafe prosecutions resulting from workplace injuries or incidents. Simon also specialises in various non-contentious matters, including drafting employment agreements and policies, privacy and official information advice, and providing workplace training. He is a sought after presenter in various employment law seminars and workshops. His wider experience includes working in New York for 12 months at the Australian Mission to the United Nations.
Tony is Managing Director of Teesdale Associates Limited and one of NZ’s leading People + Performance practitioners. The business operates nationally and provides total human resource solutions to support the business strategies of over 400 clients in all business sectors. With 40 years’ experience in human resources, Tony is primarily recognised for his strategic approach and competency in business restructuring, employment relations, employment agreement strategies, staff communications, negotiation, employment law and personal grievances & disputes. He has revolutionised the approach to employment agreement implementation through innovative design, extensive staff communication methodologies and negotiation style. He has been involved in most of the major structural changes in employment relations in NZ over the past 40 years – from the hotbed of heavy manufacturing industrial relations in 1970’s Kinleith through the 1980’s Think Big construction projects at Marsden Point, Motonui, and NZ Steel and the Waterfront and Local Government Reform processes. In the 1990s under the ECA the company developed an enviable reputation for innovative approaches to people management and business performance which continues to the present day. He has assisted clients to successfully navigate various crises, such as the 1987 sharemarket crash, the GFC and now COVID-19. Prior to becoming a consultant in 1986, Tony held senior corporate roles with New Zealand Steel Development Stage II, Wilkins & Davies Construction and NZ Forest Products. He was an adviser to the National Transition Committee for Local Government Reform in 1989 and an active participant on behalf of clients in the Waterfront Industry Reform process in the same year. Tony is a pragmatist with a record that proves there is always a way to achieve an objective if sufficient creativity and energy is directed to the task.
Kiely Thompson Caisley
Laura recently joined Kiely Thompson Caisley after an extended period overseas, most recently in Asia where she was the co-head of the Asia People and Reward practice for a prominent international firm. Laura has a broad range of experience across both contentious and non-contentions employment law matters. She has particular expertise in advising on restructuring and redundancy issues, as well as disciplinary processes and issues relating to bullying and harassment. She also has a strong background in employee investigations, employee data privacy issues and advising on the people aspects of major transactions. As well as New Zealand, Laura is admitted as a solicitor in England & Wales and in Hong Kong.
William joined SBM Legal as a Senior Solicitor in January 2020 having previously worked for a specialist employment law barrister and a top tier firm. He is a keen and committed legal representative who frequently represents clients at mediation and takes a pragmatic approach to resolving employment relationship problems. William is experienced in advising both employers and employees in relation to a wide range of employment law issues including personal grievances, investigations, disciplinary procedures, performance management, restructures, negotiated exits and taking claims through the ERA and Employment Court. William has a strong understanding of complex matters of workplace compliance, including the nuances of the Holidays Act.
Martin was admitted to the Bar in 2007. He became a Crown prosecutor for the Hamilton Crown Solicitor in 2015 after 8 years in private practice in Auckland. He joined the independent Bar in 2018. Martin has represented private individuals, corporations and government departments from New Zealand and overseas. He has acted for plaintiffs, prosecuting agencies and defendants in a broad range of cases. These have included class actions, jury trials, appeals and alternative dispute resolution processes. Career highlights include negotiated settlements, summary dismissals, complex fraud prosecutions and the application of foreign laws in New Zealand. An advocate for better access to justice, Martin has provided civil and criminal legal aid services, worked with the Citizens Advice Bureau, published information to help people understand legal processes and made submissions the New Zealand Rules Committee.
Amanda Douglas leads the Employment and Health and Safety practice at Wynn Williams. She acts on the full range of Employment Law matters, with a particular focus in the dispute resolution area. Amanda gets alongside clients to work on the best outcome for them. She and her team are recognised by Chambers and Legal 500 for their expertise in these areas, and she also frequently speaks at Employment and Health and Safety conferences.
